Verizon Dulles 

Building Addition

Herndon, VA

20,000 s.f. addition
$5 million project with $2 million of MEP work.
No downtime to operating telecommunications equipment.

 

 

DesignTech performed the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection design for the alterations and addition to the Verizon Central Office facility at Herndon, VA.. The project required that the existing building systems remain in operation during construction. The MEP work included the following upgrades to the existing building systems.

150 ton Chiller Plant
3,000 amp 277/480V main electric service
750 KW stand-by generator

Key features of the MEP systems include; new firm alarm system and high sensitivity smoke detection system, redundant power sources including diverse feeds to critical equipment, N+1 redundant HVAC system including ductwork cross-connect to allow a single redundant unit to serve as backup to several zones, DDC building control system, and modular design concepts which will allow the facility to increase from the current 20,000 square feet to an ultimate 60,000 square feet.

DesignTech coordinated with the project civil engineer to develop the site utilities with the domestic water, fire service, sanitary, and storm drainage requirements of the facility. Work included demolition of an existing well and septic system and connections to city water and sewer services.
